Annual General Meeting; August 11, 2010
On a glorious Georgian Bay Day with light winds, few clouds and warm sun about 40 people gathered in the main room of the Winter Cottage on Minnicog Island. Julie and Bill Deeks hosted the meeting in their historical old homestead. After a brief business meeting the president introduce our guest speaker, Jody Allair. Jody is a biologist and Science Educator with Bird Studies Canada. He coordinated the Ontario Nocturnal Owl Survey, BBC’s environmental education Program and works on several bird Species at Risk. Jody has been actively birding and banding in the Long Point region since he was a teenager.

Jody spoke to us about the Return of the Bald Eagle. Once almost wiped out by pesticides such as DDT/DDE, the Bald Eagle is now returning to breed in southern Ontario . Jody told the story of their remarkable come-back, shared insights into eagle breeding biology, and described eagle tracking by satellite.

After fielding many questions the members and their guests enjoyed a lunch which was followed by a half hour tour of Minnicog Island. Once again this was a most successful annual meeting of the Georgian Bay Osprey Society.

The Annual General Meeting, 2005

At the Annual General Meeting of the Georgian Bay Osprey society, held in August 2005, we heard from well known ornithologist, Ross James. Dr. James has been doing research for the last several years into the impact of wind turbines on birds. He was pleased to report to our Society that wind turbines have practically no impact on birds.
His research, as well as that of other researchers, has determined that there is far, far more bird kill by other means than by windmills. Buildings, particularly high rise buildings kill millions of birds annually. Power lines, communication towers, house cats, are all responsible for more millions of dead birds.
More pictures from the meeting can be found on the photos page.

Nest GPS Coordinates
The GBOS is currently trying to get GPS coordinates for all known Osprey nests in eastern Georgian Bay. Send any data on nests near you to GBOS@xplornet.com. Please include a description of the nest (ie. island name, bay name, etc) and the GPS coordinates identified by type (ie. NAD-27 vs. NAD-83).
View the current list of nest locations on the monitoring page.
